Karen's Top Ten Declarations of Love
"I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible"
Notes- 1.) The quality ofsome most of these videos suck, I know, and I'm sorry. But I made sure that they're at least watchable, in that you can tell what's happening and understand the audio.
2.) I don't promise happy endings to any of the stories these scenes are attached to. Just 'cause someone declares their love doesn't mean it's accepted.
10.) Harold Crick to Ana Pascal, Stranger Than Fiction
"I brought you flours."
He brought her flours. He shouldn't, because of the auditor-auditee protocols, but he doesn't care, because he wants her. It's painfully obvious that Harold probably hasn't done anything like this in a long time, if ever, but the awkwardness just makes it even more charming and lovely. And what better time to declare your love for somebody than when you're facing an inevitable death at the hands of an invisible author?
9.) Nick Parker to Elizabeth James, The Parent Trap (1998)
(Starts at 5:20)
"It took us about 30 seconds after you guys left for us to realize we didn't want to lose you two again."
I think this scene is unique because of the story surrounding it. It's not just a man trying to get back his ex-wife. It's the reunion of a family. The sisters are going to hold onto each other for dear life, and Nick and Elizabeth do still love each other, but there's a painful history here, not to mention the logistics of two totally separate lives in different countries, all of which is acknowledged, and then, at least for the moment, tossed aside.
8.) Johnny Cash to June Carter, Walk The Line
(Apologies for the watermark.)
"Now, I know I said and done a lot of things, that I hurt you, but I promise I'll never do that again."
After a long and rocky road, on a night when June tells John that he's only allowed to talk to her on stage, he does just that, and interrupts a duet for a marriage proposal. It can be kind of a dick move- and that's how June sees it at first- but it turns into a beautiful moment when he promises- in front of hundreds of people- his love and loyalty, and she finally accepts.
[Extra Trivia- The scene is set in Canada, but filmed in the Orpheum Theater, here in Memphis.]
7.) Jenna Rink to Matt Flamhaff, 13 Going On 30
[I just could not find this scene on YouTube. I'm sorry!]
"I'm just crying because I'm happy. I want you to be so, so happy."
Damn it if a scene from this silly little time-travel comedy doesn't make me tear up every once in a while. I blame the actors and the line quoted above. Alas, Matt is right. Sometimes, you don't get the dream house.
6.) The Littlest Edward to The Littlest Bella, The Secret Life of Dolls
The Confession & Show and Tell
"Come on, Sparkles, you got a date with destiny."
"I am the Venus Fly Trap of vampires! I am a pitcher plant of love!"
Yes, dolls. Hear me out. I've never read Twilight, and I don't want to. I prefer just to snark from afar (very afar). But I dare anyone to read
cleolinda's Secret Life of Dolls series and not fall in love with The Littlest Edward. It's impossible. Unless you're Bella. After weeks of OMG AGONY, Cleo gets fed up and forces Edward to tell Bella how he feels in a completely awkward and charming and hilarious encounter.
5.) Juno MacGuff to Paulie Bleeker, Juno
[I couldn't find this one, either. Sorry!]
"I think I'm in love with you." "You mean, as friends?"
Just an absolutely charming scene in a charming little offbeat movie that proves that no matter who you are, there is someone who thinks you are the coolest person in the world. It makes me smile. That's all I could ask for.
4.) Mr. Darcy to Elizabeth Bennet, Pride & Prejudice (2005)
"From the first moment I met you, your arrogance and conceit, your selfish disdain for the feelings of others made me realize that you were the last man in the world I could ever be prevailed upon to marry."
Spoiler: it doesn't go well. One can't very well blame Elizabeth for her opinion of Darcy, given what she thinks she knows, but it goes both ways. Both of them have made tremendous mistakes, and now's the moment where they get to throw it in each other's faces, and begin to make things right, so that if Darcy chooses to take a chance again, the ending will be different.
[Note- I chose the movie version because A.) It’s fresher in my mind, and B.) It’s easier to work with than an excerpt in a book.]
3.) Jim Halpert to Pam Beesly, The Office
"I just needed you to know. Once."
Jim and Pam have gone downhill in the last few years, but this scene is still wonderful. Sweet and awkward and heartbreaking. Pam knows, and has known, exactly how Jim feels. She doesn't reject him because she doesn't love him, but because she's afraid. She's not upset because of what he's saying, but because he's saying it. He's not supposed to say it. It's supposed to stay a secret. It's easier to ignore that way.
In addition, I love the camera work in this scene. You know the (in-story) camera guys were like, "It's happening! It's happening! Red alert, red alert!"
2.) Henry Roth to Lucy Reilly, Dedication
"You're, like, princess shit. You know, fairy tales...The million guys are after her, and they're blinded by your beauty kind of shit. Real big stuff, you know- even we got the dick who kidnaps you and sticks you in a cave and you're guarded by a five-headed dragon and the tales of your plight are spread throughout the land, and now all the guys go and put on their shoes so they can see what's up but none of them have the balls to save her except for me. I would go anything for you."
Yeah, I quoted almost the whole thing, because that's the only way to appreciate it. This is not a guy who will give a beautiful, eloquent speech. This guy is a dick, who knows it, and knows that he doesn't deserve this girl (and neither does her asshole fiancée), but he knows he loves her. And telling her, as best as he can, is the only way he stands a chance. It's hilarious for a moment, and then heartbreaking.
1.) Harry Burns to Sally Albright, When Harry Met Sally...
(Starts about 3:55)
"I love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like I'm nuts."
I don't think there was really any question that this was going to be number one. It's beautiful. Possibly my favorite romantic comedy overall, and this is the perfect ending for it. Every relationship is made of different things, and Harry and Sally's is made of quirks and habits that they both hate and love about each other. That's why they're perfect together: after being friends for so long, they know and love each other better than anyone else ever could.
As always, this is just my opinion. Please comment with your own opinion and tell me why I'm wrong!

The Parent Trap bugs me. On the surface it's a cute movie, but in reality those folks are horrible, selfish people. Who gives up a baby just to not have to see a dude again? That's what custody battles are for! Those kids would need years of therapy. I still love the movie, I just have to severely suspend my disbelief to watch it.
You should watch Story of Us. It's also directed by Rob Reiner and has a great This Is Why I Love You speech.
