Yes, Top Eight. See non-rant in Note #2.

Notes- 1.) No pics of clips due to time.

2.) The fact that after 21 years of reading and watching, I can't find 10 fictional female friendships worthy of being on a Top 10 list, frankly, kind of pisses me off. I could probably go into a rather ineloquent rant about what this says about our culture, but this is supposed to be a happy soapbox, so I won't.

8.) Dharma Montgomery and Jane Deaux, Dharma & Greg
(Jenna Elfman and Shae D'Lyn)
Dharma: "One time when I was babysitting your monkey, I took him to a fancy party without telling you."
Jane: "Is that where he started smoking again?"
Dharma: "Mmm-hmm."
Jane: "Do you know how hard it is to get a nicotine patch to stick to a monkey?"

Dharma and Jane met because Dharma dialed a wrong number. I suspect that they stick together because everyone needs someone to be ridiculous with, and that's exactly what Dharma and Jane have. They have shopping trips as Swedish tourists, or Siamese twins, or 1950s housewives. Even better, they have each other's backs. The first time we met Jane, she threatened Greg with death if he ever hurt Dharma. Thankfully, she never had to make good on that threat, but she would if she had to.

7.) Gemma Morrow and Tara Knowles, Sons of Anarchy
(Katy Sagal and Maggie Siff)
Gemma and Tara hated each other in the first episodes of the show. It took most of the first season for their relationship to defrost, and it wasn't until the second season that they actually became friends, in the middle of some pretty horrible circumstances. Finally, by the end of the second season, they had a deep mutual respect and a friendship forged by hellfire. And a bit of gunfire.

6.) Halley Cooke and Scarlet Thomas, Someone Like You
(Novel by Sarah Dessen)
"The world is a cold, lonely place not to have a best friend."
Halley and Scarlet's friendship is the center of Someone Like You. In between the death of Scarlet's boyfriend, her pregnancy, Halley's relationship with Macon, and all the family drama, theirs is the most consistent relationship in their lives. Thanks to each other, they make it through a trying year and come out a little wiser and stronger for it.

5.) Veronica Mars and Cindy Mackenzie, Veronica Mars
(Kristen Bell and Tina Majorino)
Mac: "With your sleuth prowess and my programming skills, I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that we would rule the entire known universe."
It's an interesting friendship that begins with one person breaking into the other's car, then asking for hacking advice. But Veronica Mars and Mac are not ordinary girls. A teen detective and a computer genius is a match made in a rather frightening part of Heaven, especially if you make an enemy out of one of them. I have no doubt that if they combined their powers they could, as Mac said above, potentially rule the universe. In fact, they still might one day.
(Ooh, I think I just found the plot for the VM movie. Thomas! Call me! *finger phone*)

4.) Louise Sawyer and Thelma Dickinson, Thelma & Louise
(Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis)
Thelma: "That jerk was hurting me, and if you hadn't come along when you had he would've hurt me even worse."
"The shifts of fortune test the reliability of friends." I'd say almost being raped, shooting a man, and going on the run counts as a "shift of fortune". Still, Thelma and Louise stick together, through (understandable) emotional breakdowns, thieving hitchhikers, breaking up with the men in their lives, and a few unexpected detours. One of the best aspects of the movie is how their relationship shifts. At the beginning, Louise is the mother figure, halfway through, Thelma takes over, and by the end, they're equal.

3.) Lovey Howell, Ginger Grant, and Mary Ann Summers, Gilligan's Island
(Natalie Schafer, Tina Louise, and Dawn Wells)
The castaways of the Minnow may have started as strangers, but they became a family. In my opinion, no relationship on the show reflects that better than the friendship between Ginger and Mary Ann, and the mother/mentor relationship they have with Mrs. Howell. Like every other friendship, there are fights and jealousy (usually aimed at Ginger) and rivalries, but when push comes to shove, these women rise to the occasion and work together to get things done.

2.) Lucy Ricardo and Ethel Mertz, I Love Lucy
(Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance}
Lucy: "I have an idea!"
Ethel: "How can you stand there in the middle of this mess and utter those four horrible words: 'I have an idea'?"

It's hard to imagine Lucy without Ethel, the mastermind without the right-hand (wo)man. Not only because Lucy would probably get herself killed without Ethel, but because Ethel serves as Lucy's "shoulder angel" in a way, reining her in when she gets a little too out-of-control. Or tries to, anyway. The two aren't afraid to snark on each other or call each other out on their mistakes. And even though they have their fair share of arguments (over really silly things sometimes), they always reunite, and stick together with a strong loyalty and a willingness to jump headfirst into whatever ridiculous circumstance they find themselves in.

1.) You and Me
Here's where I get mushy for a minute. Bear with me here.
Basically, all of my friends are girls. Over the years, I have accumulated so many supportive, loving, fantastic girlfriends, both in real life and online. Strong, smart, fierce young women, who have seen me through life crises, dozens of writing projects, and a few stupid decisions, surround me. I am who I am because of the people I've surrounded myself with, and I wouldn't trade any of those relationships for anything. I love you all.

As always, this is only my opinion. Please comment and tell me why I'm wrong!
