Karen's Top Ten Bromances

The second entry in my Top Ten series celebrating friendship.

Note- No pics or clips due to limited time.

10.) The Ocean's Crew
(George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Elliot Gould, Carl Reiner, Casey Affleck, Scott Caan, Eddie Jemison, Bernie Mac, Shaobo Qin)
Turk: (re: Willy Bank) "I don't care if it gets messy."
Virgil: "I'll drive you. We'll get him leaving his barber."
Livingston: "And I'll inject him."
Basher: "And I'll find a spot to get rid of the body."

From Ocean's 11 to 13, the relationship between the main characters changes quite a bit. In 11, they're mostly acquaintances or strangers who bond throughout the film. In 12, they begin seeming resentful of being labeled a team, and bicker quite a bit through the movie (understandable, considering the pressure they're under). 13 is where the friendship really shines. They go millions of dollars into debt and risk their freedom and their lives to avenge Reuben. As bad a pun as the tagline is, it's true: when you cross one, you cross them all.

9.) Mike Wazowski and James Sullivan, Monsters, Inc.
(Voiced by Billy Crystal and John Goodman)
Mike: "I'm telling you, Big Daddy, you're gonna be seeing this face on TV a lot more often.
Sully: "Yeah, like on 'Monstroplis' Most Wanted'"?
Mike: "Ha, ha, ha. You've been jealous of my good looks since the fourth grade, pal."

Mike and Sully go through quite an experience in the film. They begin as two carefree roommates and friends who, through no fault of their own, are thrown into the deep end when a human kid shows up who pushes the two of them apart, and then brings them back together.

8.) Skipper and Gilligan, Gilligan's Island
(Alan Hale, Jr. and Bob Denver)
Gilligan: "You're a big man with a big head and-
Skipper: "Gilligan!"
Gilligan: "And a big heart."

It's not easy to live with Gilligan, but it's so easy to love him. That's why it takes a special kind of guy to be his Big Buddy. Someone who can call Gilligan out on his mistakes, but still recognize his good heart. That's where the Skipper comes in. Sure, his temper is a little short, but Gilligan is good-hearted enough to handle it, and he can be quite pushy, but sometimes that's what scaredy-cat Gilligan needs sometimes. That's why they need each other.

7.) Harry Potter and Ron Weasley, Harry Potter
(Series by J.K. Rowling)
Ron: "We're with you whatever happens."
Harry and Ron's relationship isn't perfect. They've had their disagreements, and sometimes Ron can get jealous of Harry's fame. But no matter what, their friendship is unshakable.

6.) Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, Sherlock Holmes
(Series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)
Holmes: "You have a grand gift of silence, Watson. It makes you quite invaluable as a companion."
I have, compared to everyone else, limited knowledge of the Holmes canon, limited to Hound of the Baskervilles and the 2009 movie, but even I can see what a delight the Holmes/Watson relationship is. As brilliant as Holmes is by himself, it's clear how much he needs Watson, not just as a colleague, but as a friend.

5.) Daniel and Jonas, lonelygirl15
(Yousef Abu-Taleb and Jackson Davis)
Daniel: "Jonas...you're the toughest guy I know."
Daniel and Jonas's friendship is an interesting journey. Originally, they really (and I mean really) didn't like each other, possibly out of jealousy over Bree. Eventually they warmed to each other, and spent seasons two and three fighting the Order side-by-side. Quite a few characters came and went through the series, some betraying TAAG, some leaving quietly to live their own lives, but these two always stood firm, loyal to the fight and to each other.

4.) Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley, Pride & Prejudice
(Novel by Jane Austen)
Darcy: "I have no wish of denying that I did everything in my power to separate my friend from your sister, or that I rejoice in my success. Towards him I have been kinder than towards myself."
A very good case of "Opposites Attract", Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley are as different as two people can be. How the uptight, sometimes cold Mr. Darcy came to meet and befriend the friendly, open Mr. Bingley I'm not entirely sure, but he did, and it becomes increasingly clear throughout the story how much Darcy cares for his friend and how much he'll do to keep him from getting hurt, and when that backfires, to make it right.
(One of my favorite moments from the 2005 movie is Darcy and Bingley standing on a riverbank, practicing Bingley's proposal, with Darcy playing Jane.)

3.) The cast of Whose Line Is It Anyway?
(Ryan Stiles, Colin Mochrie, Wayne Brady, Drew Carey, Brad Sherwood, Greg Proops, and Chip Esten)
Colin: "It all started with a badly timed bald joke!"
Drew once called Whose Line the "gayest show on television," and it's hard to disagree. That's what happens when you get four comedians together on a stage who are willing to do anything for a laugh. When it's four men, you combine that with a lot of good-natured jokes at each other's expense, especially dirty ones, and a few moments of genuine affection that show how much they really love working together.

2.) Shawn Spencer and Burton Guster, Psych
(James Roday and Dule Hill)
Shawn: "Your best man was a goat? Gus! I was supposed to be that goat!"
Shawn and Gus have a fascinating relationship. It's hard to find a scene where they're together and they don't argue. Shawn constantly interferes in Gus's life, and whenever they're in trouble, they'll sell each other out without a second thought. Still, they've been together since childhood, and obviously care very much about each other and their friendship. Whenever something threatens to come between them, whether it's a bank robbery, or Gus's long-lost wife (no, really), Shawn will fight with everything he has to keep Gus around.

1.) Calvin and Hobbes
(Comic by Bill Watterson)
Calvin: "It's a magical world, Hobbes, ol' buddy...Let's go exploring!"
There is no bond quite like that of a boy and his tiger. Especially this boy and this tiger. If the first strip is to be believed, Calvin trapped Hobbes using a tuna fish sandwich. For the next 10 years (in real time, anyway; not comic book time) they stuck together like glue, through first grade, Christmas, and horrible family camping trips, with childish philosophy, energy, and a lot of imagination.

Honorable Mention- Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh, Lethal Weapon- Riggs and Murtaugh don't get off to the best start, but over the course of 4 films in 11 years, they become partners, best friends, and practically family, and despite plenty of near misses and injuries, growing old together.

Honorable Mention- The Marauders, Harry Potter- Definitely the most tragic relationship on the list. James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter were the best of friends through their years at Hogwarts, until Peter's betrayal led to James's death and Sirius's 12-year imprisonment. Despite that, when Sirius and Remus are finally reunited, their friendship is reignited, as strong as ever, and it takes no less than their own deaths to separate them again.

As always, this is just my opinion. Comment and tell me yours!
