Karen's Top Ten On-Screen Kisses and Almost-Kisses

I know you've all been waiting with bated breath for my next Top Ten list, and here it is! Don't worry, there's more where this came from!

The Process: I made a list of memorable kisses (and near-misses), mostly off the top of my head. Then I thought them over and scored them in three areas:
Sweetness- Emotion in both the context and the kiss itself.
Sexiness- Self-explanatory.
Context- What happens before, what happens after, and how the moment fits into the overall story.
Honestly, I was a little surprised by the outcome.

Notes: I was gonna do this right and rewatch all of these scenes before I wrote them up, but Midnight decided to be a little bitch and not let the DVD player work. Since it's the only working one in the house (yes, really; don't be surprised), I'm forced to work from memory.
Also, Photobucket still hates me and I wanted to get this up before November starts, so we're going sans pictures this time. Sorry, y'all.

10.) The Professor & Ginger Grant- Gilligan's Island- Episode: "Castaway Pictures Presents"
Sweetness: 2. I love me some Professor and Ginger, but there's no real emotion here. (Or at least none that we're allowed to see.) They're making a movie and besides going above and beyond the call of duty, they're both rather professional about it. I do like that they're in-character, with the Professor being nervous and stumbling over the chair, and Ginger enjoying watching the scene at the screening.
Sexiness: 10. I might be grading on a curve here, but still...damn.
Context: 8. It's handled in classic Gilligan's Island fashion. Everyone's in character, even Mr. Howell and Gilligan, watching. (They're filming it for the movie. Perverts.) It's joked about and it has no outcome to the overall plot, even though, really, they totally overdid it and if it were a different show, you'd probably get some emotional fallout from it. But it's Gilligan's Island, so you don't.
Also: "I used to be a scuba diver." I <3 the Professor.
Total Score: 20

9.) Jim Halpert & Pam Beesley- The Office- Episode: "Casino Night"
Sweetness: 8. Jim's already been turned down, but he can't resist giving another little push. Pam's obviously confused as to what she wants. The whole situation is so sad, and the kiss itself is incredibly sweet and lovely.
Sexiness: 4.
Context: 9. It's following one of my favorite "I love you" proclamations of all time. They're alone in the office after-hours. They're kinda dressed up. It's a make-or-break moment for them and the series. It would be a 10 if she didn't turn him down.
Total Score: 21

8.) Danny & Tess Ocean- Ocean's Eleven (Almost Kiss)
Sweetness: 5. The whole Tess/Danny backstory is so sad and even though you understand her frustration and distrust, you can't help but feel sympathy for him. His going for the cheek instead of the lips is a nice little move. His ulterior motive does spoil it a little, but you know he's doing it all for her anyway.
Sexiness: 8. The lighting is fantastic and the elegance of the restaurant and wardrobe really add something. Plus, it's Clooney, so that's like a 5 to begin with.
Context: 8. It's a device that actually adds to the plot (although we don't know that until later). It's a nice emotional moment for the main character, and it fits nicely into the beginning of the third act.
Total Score: 21

7.) Paulie Bleeker & Juno MacGuff- Juno
Sweetness: 10. Oh, my god, I could just transcribe the whole thing. "You're like the coolest person I know, and you don't even try." "I try really hard, actually." And, "You're golden, man." And the line about her heart beating really fast, and him touching her belly. Ugh. *melts*
Sexiness: 2. I'm sorry. She's eight months pregnant.
Context: 9. It's a really wonderful emotional high point. I love Leah's response and the fact that it takes place on the track.
Total Score: 21

6.) Phil Diffy & Keely Teslow- Phil of the Future- Episode: "Back To The Future (Not The Movie)"
Sweetness: 9. They've been friends for two years and have only been together for about a week (I think) before his family goes back to the future and they probably never see each other again. But she "can't not say good-bye" to him and he makes his dad turn the time machine around so he can say good-bye while she's doing the school's news broadcast. He kisses her on the air and everyone is so happy for them.
Before they're ripped apart forever. You suck, Disney.
Sexiness: 5. Surprisingly high for a Disney show. I think it's mostly in the way the actors play it. They're holding on for dear life there.
Context: 8. It's the very last scene the two characters have together and, as mentioned, probably the last time they'll ever see each other, but it's more joy that they get to say good-bye rather than sadness that they have to. The classmates cheering for them is great and the "time machine" slip of the tongue adds humor. "In the future will you wait for me?" is sad and lovely. And the last time we see Keely, she's smiling.
Total Score: 22

5.) Agents Weiss & Morales- Chasing Liberty
Sweetness: 5. Weiss is really kind of a gentleman, which is a good sign of his character development. Also, I like that the whole thing started with him taking her advice, and the really obvious way he takes off his hat to show off the haircut.
Sexiness: 8. I love the way he totally just goes for it. And the hair really is kinda sexy.
Context: 5. It's following the main couple's hook-up, and they're connected by a phone call, which is good. But it's followed by a really bad joke, which is not good.
Total Score: 23

4.) Jason Bourne & Marie Helena Kreutz- The Bourne Identity
Sweetness: 6. It's really all in the context of the characters' relationship. They've already been through so much together, she's just agreed to stick with him despite everything. And I like that they're (or at least, he's) a little unsure at first.
Sexiness: 10. Besides the obvious shirtlessness...I have a thing for arms. And Bourne!Damon? Damn.
Context: 7. It totally changes the characters' relationship, and while I like that they don't overplay that, I think they might underplay it a little. I'm not sure.
Total Score: 23

3.) Joe & Allison Dubois- Medium- Episode: "Twice Upon A Time"
Sweetness: 8. Even though she's married to someone else in this reality and barely knows this version of Joe, Allison is drawn to him. She just knows that she's supposed to be there with him and even though he doesn't seem to at first, he knows it too. If you know their real story, you can't help but love this scene.
Sexiness: 7. It's the last scene of a romantic movie in the middle of a TV episode. And there's rain. And something about the fact that they're married makes it sexier. (Even though, in that reality, they're not. I know, it's confusing.)
Context: 9. It's the perfect way to end that part of the show and get us back to reality. And the concept of the episode itself is pretty awesome.
Total Score: 24

2.) Tony Stark & Pepper Potts- Iron Man (Almost Kiss)
Sweetness: 8. The awkwardness is so fantastic. Pepper listing every reason why they shouldn't have danced together, and Tony trying to convince her that it was no big deal. They're so in-character.
Sexiness: 8. The tension is fantastic. The dress even more so.
Context: 10. This is how you do UST. The characters know exactly what's going on and who they are and why it's a potentially bad idea. They almost give in, then stop, then cut the tension with humor (and a martini) and move on with the movie.
Casting Roberty Downey, Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow probably helps.
Total Score: 26

1.) Fox Mulder & Dana Scully- The X-Files: Fight The Future (Almost Kiss)
Sweetness: 10. He needs her. She's saved him. Just kiss her already, dammit!
(I love his little apology when she jerks away.)
Sexiness: 9. Ack, the tension!
Context: 8. It's a really nice bridge between the emotion of Scully almost leaving and the plot of her being kidnapped. Although Scully's doctor-speak, while in-character, takes me out of the moment a little.
Plus, I dare you to find me a shipper that hasn't rewatched this scene a million times.
Total Score: 27

Honorable Mention: Shawn Spencer & Juliet O'Hara- Pysch (Almost Kiss)- They're both really in-character, which counts for a lot. It's a nicely-done end to the episode, but in the big picture of the whole series, I think it was too early. Total Score: 15

Honorable Mention: Steven Hyde & Jackie Burkhart- That 70's Show- (The real version of their first one. I can't remember what episode exactly.) The casualness of the whole thing is wonderful. I like the way they're barely touching. He just kind of rests his arm on her leg. It's cool. There is no context, which is perfect. They're sitting there, bored, watching TV (The Price Is Right, if I remember correctly) and they just lean over and kiss. Then they go back to watching TV. It's so wonderfully underplayed. Total Score: 17

As always, this is just my OPINION. I'd love to hear yours. Leave a comment and tell me why I'm wrong! :-)
