This is overdue, but since I have a good Wi-Fi signal at the moment I decided to go ahead and put it together while I had the chance.

(Also, it's good for procrastination. ;-))

I'd forgotten how funny this movie was. Rob Reiner is a great comedic director. The little touches, like Jess and Harry getting up to do the wave while talking about about Harry's divorce, or Sally just throwing her kleenexes over her shoulder, really add a lot.

I watched most of the movie with The Brother, and I think he described the relationship well: "They're together and don't even realize it." It's wonderful to watch them go from two college students who don't even like each other to two friends becoming more and more intimate. You can see how they physically become closer, literally, through dancing on the first New Years to hugging in front of Jess and Marie's apartment and then when Harry gives her a couple of very casual kisses before they sleep together. Plus, as neurotic as she is, he makes her laugh, and they have incredible chemistry.

(I liked the wagon wheel coffee table, by the way.)

(Oh, and thanks for totally ruining the ending of Casablanca for me. :-P)

The acting is awesome. The leads really make the characters grow believably. They start off with Sally as a naive, determined young woman and Harry as a Frat Boy with a dark side and eventually, they grow into (mostly) mature adults. Also, the moment where Sally wonders why Joe didn't want to marry her is kind of heart-breaking.

I loved the parts with the older couples telling how they met. My favorite is the couple that keeps talking over each other about how they were feet away from each other their whole lives and never met and then finally met in an elevator while on vacation. "I rode up nine extra floors just to keep talking to her."

I LOVE the next-to-last scene. It's one of the best proclamations of love I've seen on film. He makes a huge mushy speech, she's still angry at him, they kiss and then they have a ridiculous conversation about "Auld Lang Syne".

"I came here tonight because when you realize you wanna spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to begin as soon as possible."

Harry: You were going to be a gymnast.
Sally: A journalist.
Harry: Right, that's what I said.

Harry: You know, I have a theory that hieroglyphics are just an ancient comic strip about a character named Sphinxy.

Jess: Marriages don't break up on account of infidelity. It's just a symptom that something else is wrong.
Harry: Oh, really? Well that symptom is fucking my wife.

Harry: The fact that you're not answering leads me to believe you're either (A) not at home, (B) home but don't want to talk to me, or (C) home, desperately want to talk to me, but trapped under something heavy. If it's either A or C, please call me back.

Harry: [about his ex-wife] She must be retaining water.
Sally: Harry!
Harry: Believe me, the woman saved everything.

The segments of married couples telling the stories of how they met are real stories that Rob Reiner collected for the film. Actors relate the stories.

In the museum scene, Billy Crystal adlibs, "But, I would love to partake of your pecan pie." Meg Ryan laughs and looks to her right where Rob Reiner silently prompts her to go with it.

Before deciding on the title, "Just Friends", "Playing Melancholy Baby", "Boy Meets Girl", "Blue Moon", "Words of Love", "It Had To Be You", "Harry, This Is Sally", and "How They Met" were considered by Nora Ephron, Andrew Scheinman, and Rob Reiner.

Sally's picky and crazy eating habits were put into the movie after Rob Reiner saw Nora Ephron ordering her food in the same way Sally did in the movie. When Rob brought it up, Nora said, "I just like it the way I like it", a line which was put into the movie.

SPOILER: In the first draft of the film, Harry and Sally did not end up together. It was only later that Nora Ephron and Rob Reiner decided that Harry and Sally belonged together.

All right, back to work.
